Tauben & Co — was die App kann
Funktionen
Stand: 31. Oktober 2026
Die vier Wege: BirdNET-Go, AvianVisitors, Tauben-&-Co-Station, Nur zuhören.

Tauben & Co — what the app can do
Features
Last updated: 31 October 2026
What the app can do
Everything Tauben & Co can do today, in groups, with one sentence per feature. Under each feature you can see for which way it is available. Only what is built is listed as a feature; what is still being made is marked “in the works”.
The features involving the Pi and the server (videos, notifications, live band, messages, call comparison and so on) run today at the project’s existing stations. The package for setting up such a server yourself is in the works, see Set up a server. What only needs a phone or a BirdNET-Go or AvianVisitors station already works today.
The four ways: BirdNET-Go, AvianVisitors, Tauben & Co station, Listen only (start page).
- Collage, widgets and notifications
- Videos
- Live listening and detection on the phone
- Species card, comparison, marking as wrong, photos
- Messages between devices

Collage, widgets and notifications
Collage of the day
The birds of the day as an illustrated collage, with counts. The look comes from AvianVisitors; the app shows it and keeps it up to date.
With BirdNET-Go the app builds the collage itself from the station’s detections, no adapter needed; the BirdNET-Go dashboard stays reachable from the menu. With “Listen only” the collage is made from what the phone heard.

Statistics and history
Daily rhythm, life list, calendar and species counts, right in the station view.
With BirdNET-Go the app shows statistics and history itself as well, in the style of AvianVisitors.

Widgets for the Home Screen and Lock Screen
The collage of the day as a widget (iPhone: small, medium, large; Android: 2×2 to 4×4, resizable) and a short summary for the iPhone Lock Screen. The time span is selectable: 1, 3, 6, 12, 24 or 48 hours.
With BirdNET-Go and AvianVisitors the app fetches the species list from your station and sends only species names and counts to a small drawing service that paints the picture. Places, recordings and your station’s address do not go with it (privacy policy, section 3.4).

Notifications
You choose: off, new species only, or every detection. Plus a notification when a review is ready. “Every detection” is bundled, so there is no flood.
With BirdNET-Go and AvianVisitors the phone checks the station itself, with no server in between (from version 1.4). This only works when the phone can reach the station, for example on the home network or over a VPN. The operating system decides how often the app checks in the background, so notifications often arrive late.

Videos made on the phone
Weekly reviews that the phone assembles itself: from your station’s data or from what the phone heard. No server of your own needed. The voice is machine-generated.
From version 1.4. The first time, the app downloads the voice once (more than 100 MB, on Wi-Fi only by default). With Tauben & Co stations the videos are still made on the server.

Your own Gemini key for the scripts (optional)
If you like, you enter a Gemini key of your own. Gemini then writes the video script instead of the fixed templates. The request goes straight from the phone to Google: species names, times in words and sentences from Wikipedia, never sound, no place and no detection counts. You pay any costs yourself; the app tells you so beforehand.
From version 1.4; without a key the app works with fixed templates. The key stays in the phone’s protected storage and never goes to us.

Live listening and detection on the phone
Listening with the phone’s microphone
The BirdNET model runs on the phone itself. The sound is analysed in three-second slices and discarded immediately: no recording, no upload. You see a scrolling spectrogram and the finds as a list, with drawing, name, percentage and time. It keeps running with the screen dark until you stop. The finds stay on the phone.
If you share your position, the phone filters species by region; it never leaves the phone.
- available: ✓ Tauben & Co Station
- available: ✓ BirdNET-Go
- available: ✓ AvianVisitors
- available: ✓ Listen only
Read species names aloud
While listening, the phone can say the name of the detected species with the system voice, also through headphones. A species is not announced again right away. The app itself sends nothing onto the network for it.
From version 1.4. The switch is in Settings.

Live band of the station
The station’s microphone as a scrolling spectrogram band, with a marker for every find and an info card for the species. The display deliberately runs about 22 seconds behind: that is how long detection takes, and it puts each marker exactly on its call.
BirdNET-Go has a live stream of its own; connecting it is conceivable later.

Species card, comparison, marking as wrong, photos
Species card (atlas)
Illustrated birds in several poses, a Wikipedia text, identification notes and links.
The card comes from AvianVisitors. The Wikipedia text appears in the location’s language; with BirdNET-Go the app currently fetches it in English.

- available: ✓ BirdNET-Go
- available: ✓ AvianVisitors
- not available: – Listen only
Photos of the species
Freely licensed photos from iNaturalist and Wikimedia Commons, to flick through or view full screen. Author and licence are shown with every picture. Your browser never talks to those sites; the server fetches the pictures.
- available: ✓ Tauben & Co Station
- not available: – BirdNET-Go
- not available: – AvianVisitors
- not available: – Listen only
Call comparison
Every recording has a “compare” button: your recording with its spectrogram on top, reference recordings of the same species from xeno-canto below to click through. That way you check by ear whether the detection was right. Recordists and licences are shown.
The server’s operator needs a free xeno-canto account for this.

Second opinion
On the server a second model (Perch v2 from Google) re-checks every recording. Its value appears in small type below BirdNET’s percentage, for example “Perch 87%”. It does not find new species; it only double-checks.
- available: ✓ Tauben & Co Station
- not available: – BirdNET-Go

Messages between devices
Postcards
You connect your device with someone else’s, say a friend’s, and send pictures and short notes. They arrive as a postcard with a stamp (“heard 3×”). This only works with the other side’s consent, and either side can end or block the connection at any time.
A photo is redrawn on the server: without location, camera or timestamp. Everything is deleted after 30 days, and at once when the connection is ended. Text stays plain text; links are not clickable.

Adjust detection
Confidence threshold, sensitivity, overlap and range filter can be changed in the app, but only with manager rights. The app asks before every change, and “Back to previous value” undoes it. The Pi checks every request itself against a fixed list before accepting it.
A small selection for BirdNET-Go is in the works; with AvianVisitors the app displays the settings and links to the station.

Open your own station
Foreign stations appear in a window of their own in the app, with a small menu at the top (Settings, Open station). If the station asks for a user name and password, the app uses them for the current session only. A BirdNET-Go password is only saved if you agree, and then in the Keychain or Keystore.
The app only accepts unencrypted addresses (http://) on the home network.

The Pi keeps itself running
A watchdog brings the Pi back after Wi-Fi outages. The fan keeps running afterwards so the Pi does not keep switching on and off. When the card is nearly full, the Pi tidies up only once the server has the data safely. That way it never silently stops listening.
In a self-built setup this belongs to the installer, which is still in the works.

Filter for human voices
By default BirdNET-Pi blanks out very large parts of the sound as soon as a voice is suspected anywhere. Our patch lets detection analyse everything. Saved clips and the live band, however, have exactly the seconds with a voice muted, plus a short margin.
The filter can miss very quiet or whispered voices; see the privacy policy, section 3.9. In a self-built setup the patch comes with the installer, which is still in the works.

Security
The Pi pushes its data to the server; the server cannot reach into the Pi. Maintenance access by SSH belongs to the operator alone, with a key that is not kept on the server. Access to every location runs through a password and a signed cookie. Device tokens release only the picture and the short summary, never recordings or settings. Foreign pages get no bridge into the app.

In the works
- The installer for the Raspberry Pi and the package for your own server (see the two guide previews).
- Help sheets in the app that explain, for each of the four cards, what to enter where.
- Version 1.4 of the app: notifications for BirdNET-Go and AvianVisitors, videos the phone builds by itself, and reading species names aloud.
- BirdNET-Go station settings from within the app.
- The e-ink picture frame.
